The number of religious people seem to be declining in today's modern societies, but the reflection on some of the new lifestyles and communities shows that we are still living in religious societies. It might be true that monopoly and social dominance of formal and institutionalized religions are decreased, but individuals still tend to be religious in a variety of ways. In this study, we try to investigate this very issue, among the vegetarians of Tehran using the ethnographic method. The results of this study show that most vegetarians in Tehran view vegetarianism as a tool for purification of self and aligning with nature. They have common beliefs, rituals and practices through which they distinguish themselves as a chosen community from other people or deviants. In addition to canonization of vegetarianism and by embracing the ideas from mysticism, vegetarians state their goal as alignment with the universe and avoiding materialism. From this perspective, rather than being an ethical lifestyle, vegetarianism poses itself as a kind of non-institutionalized and emerging religion that attracts people especially from the lower classes of society.
